Desiree DeVries grew up in northern Vermont on a Morgan breeding farm. Her early show experiences were on the tough New England Morgan circuit riding under the tutelage of Bonnie Sogoloff, Luman Wadhams, Jackie Qua, Mary Cockriel and, ultimately Marilyn Childs. It was at Marilyn and Harold Childs Harolyn Hill Farm that 10-year-old Desiree was first exposed to Saddlebreds as well as taught how to start colts. She continued spending summers with the Childs showing and riding both Morgans and ASB five-gaited horses. Meanwhile, she assumed the role of trainer at her family's breeding farm, breaking all the young stock.
During her four years at Middlebury College, where she graduated summa cum laude, Desiree volunteered at the well-established UVM Morgan Horse Farm where she assisted with the breaking of young stock, including many colts who went on to earn world championships. Following graduation she worked for Luman Wadhams, Bonnie Sogoloff and the AMHA while pursuing a career in law. Ultimately, her pursuits reverted to her childhood dreams of training Saddlebreds and she gave up law to accept an assistant trainer position with five-gaited master, Rick Wallen, of Marshall, Wisconsin. After five years in this position, Desiree, along with her most successful project, Grand Revival, opened up her own barn, initally operating out of Barry Stables in Oregon, Wisconsin, and later, her own facility in nearby Verona.
After four more years in the cold climes of Wisconsin, Desiree decided she was better suited to a warmer climate. She closed the northern barn and moved her operation briefly to southern California before spending two years in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2011 she and husband Scott moved their stable back to Madison, Wisconsin, in order to provide better sales and services for their customers.
